Viewer turnout for a program that aired Sunday set a record for Spanish-language ratings in the United States. Variety reports that an estimated 10.4 million viewers, on average, watched the World Cup soccer match between Mexico and the Netherlands, which aired on Univision.

Many of those Spanish-language viewers probably came away disappointed, as Mexico lost the match 2-1 to be eliminated from the competition, which is taking place in Brazil.

The viewer turnout, estimated by Nielsen, topped the previous record for a World Cup match on Univision, when 9.4 million viewers watched Mexico take on Argentina in 2010.

"It also edges out a December 2007 episode of 'Destilando Amor' as the most-viewed telecast in the States of any Spanish-language program," Variety reports, adding: "Univision is having its most-watched World Cup ever, with overall viewership up more than 40% from the 2010 tournament."

The Mexico-Netherlands match also attracted an audience of 6.57 million viewers on ESPN, pushing total U.S. viewership for the game to about 17 million. The ESPN audience was the network's largest ever for a World Cup match in which Team USA was not one of the teams.
