Terry Matalas, the co-executive producer of Syfy’s upcoming “12 Monkeys,” which has a 13-episode order from the cable channel, said the project is a “complete reimagining” of the 1995 film, as he “didn’t want to just redo what the movie does,” The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports.

The movie, directed by Terry Gilliam, starred Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe and Brad Pitt, with Pitt receiving an Oscar nomination and winning a Golden Globe for best supporting actor.

The Syfy series will track a time traveler, played by Aaron Stanford, as he leaves the post-apocalyptic future to return to the present day in search of a plague, which he wants to destroy before it eliminates the human race.

“Everything from the top down changed,” Matalas said.

The story notes that the new project's time-traveling visual effects were influenced by the 2012 film “Looper,” adding that the characters will travel to different time periods, including World War I.

"At the end of the day, the producers were itching to do 'a gritty time-traveling show,' said Matalas, and felt audiences were ready to dive into a show with a rich mythology as 12 Monkeys," THR notes.

Matalas added: “We wanted it to be grounded and closer to a thriller, but that’s not to say we wont play with tone."
