Fox plans to start a country music awards show called the American Country Awards, in effect testing whether television can support four telecasts devoted to country music awards, reports the Hollywood Reporter.

Fox will debut its program on Dec. 6, the story says. Already, two of Fox’s rivals have country music awards shows, with CBS broadcasting the Academy of Country Music Awards and ABC airing the Country Music Awards, the story says.

CMT airs the Country Music Television Awards, which ranks as the cable network’s highest rated program. The article points out that sales of country-music awards fell 9.1% during the first half of 2010.
