As Simon Cowell Readies U.S. Version of ‘The X Factor,’ U.K. Show Faces Investigation For Being Too Raunchy

As Simon Cowell readies a U.S. version of "The X Factor" for a fall debut, the U.K. show is facing an investigation from the country’s media regulator Ofcom after more than 4,000 complaints were made over dance routines from Christina Aguilera and Rihanna, reports the Guardian.

The singers reportedly performed "raunchy" routines during the talent show, which was broadcast on Dec. 11, the article notes. Ofcom received 2,750 complaints, while 1,500 were received by ITV.

Photos from the routines were published in the Daily Mail and can be seen here.

The Daily Mail wrote that "horrified parents — who watched the show with their sons and daughters – also accused ITV of breaking the bond of trust with viewers by failing to tone down the performances for younger fans."

The Guardian notes that Ofcom’s broadcasting code aims to "protect children from sexualized content" and that it should protect children by "appropriate scheduling from material that is unsuitable for them." The show was watched by an average audience of about 14 million viewers.
