Costco, Fed up With Lack of Apple Cooperation, to Get Rid of iPods and iTunes Products

Dec 10, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Costco, the giant discount retailer, said it’s getting rid of Apple products such as iPods and pre-loaded iTunes cards because the technology company never allowed Costco to sell its products online or at large discounts, according to the Seattle Times.

The decision to phase out Apple products comes after Costco was snubbed when it came to the iPad, since Target, Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club were allowed to carry the devices but not Costco, points out the New York Post.

It’s a similar tactic to a fight over pricing with Coca-Cola a few years ago, when Costco stopped ordering the soda for more than three weeks, posting signs that it wanted to "pass along the value our members deserve," the Post story points out. Costco and Coke settled the dispute without comment, the Post adds.

  1. Aha, that explains my morning trip today to Costco, where I was unable to locate an iPod or iPad products. I figured something was afoot. They still sell ancillary devices for the iPod.
Usually people who shop at Costco want “bulk” and still go to Walmart and Target for smaller quantities. Not sure if this will hurt Apple. Not many of the Costco-only crowd buy iPads. In face, their computer offerings look like an afterthought compared to Best Buy.

  2. sorry, but this Costco shopper never shops at Walmart. Different target demographics. Hopefully Costco and Apple make up. I need some Itunes cards.

  3. I have frequently purchased itune cards at Costco for gifts. I would purchase something else rather than have to go to a second store to buy Itune cards. It seems silly and short-sighted on Apples’s part. Is this just Steve Jobs trying to show how powerful he is again? Isn’t it time Steve grew up and learned to play nice?

  4. Apple is getting on my nerves. They are now limiting the number of CDs you can burn in iTunes from a given playlist. I am legitimately buying the music, why can’t I make CDs to have in my car, etc? When I scratch them, I want to make new ones but Apple is counting the number of CDs I burn now. Getting a little too big brother for me…

  5. In all likelyhood this is Costco wanting a retailer discount better that other Apple retailers get. From what I understand (from multiple sources), Apple has the same discount rate for all their retailers and doesn’t give anyone special rates.
