Discovery Trying to Get Distributors to Pay More Money to Carry the Oprah Winfrey Network; Some Are Fighting Increase

Even though Oprah Winfrey usually turns everything she touches into gold, some pay-television carriers are resisting demands for higher fees for her new Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), which debuts Jan. 1, reports Ronald Grover and Andy Fixmer at Bloomberg BusinessWeek.

According to the article, "Discovery, which has agreed to loan OWN $189 million, is pressing cable and satellite TV systems to pay three times the 7 cents per subscriber it was getting monthly for Discovery Health. DirecTV (DTV) has so far refused, waiting for its existing deal with Discovery to expire in more than two years, says a person with knowledge of the talks. [OWN CEO, Christina]Norman says some operators are indeed waiting out their existing Health channel contracts, but may end up paying more if they wait…."

  1. i would pay NOT to have OWN on my cable system. this has not proved to be a ratings winner. discovery has got some balls to ask for more money now.
