Oscar-winning director Ron Howard plans to adapt Stephen King’s seven-part novel "The Dark Tower" as a series of feature films and a television show, reports The Washington Post.

Howard has been working on the big project with producer Brian Grazer and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, with the idea of having a trilogy on the big screen along with a companion TV series to cover the sections of the books not presented in theaters.

"The Dark Tower" is the story of gunslinger named Roland Deschain who tangles with magic, monsters and mutants, the article reports. Howard has been in discussions with NBC Universal about the epic, but so far nothing has been greenlighted.

In a statement about Howard’s ambitious plan, King said, "I’ve been waiting for the right team to bring the characters and stories in these books to film and TV viewers … [and] respect the origins and the characters in ‘The Dark Tower’ that fans have come to love."
