Character Actor Known for ‘Seinfeld’ Guest-Starring Role Dead at 96

Veteran character actor Bill Erwin, who received an Emmy nomination for his guest role on NBC’s "Seinfeld," has died, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 96.

Erwin played the angry Sid Fields, an elderly man Seinfeld volunteers to watch but then loses in the 1993 "Seinfeld" episode "The Old Man." Erwin was also known for his role as Arthur the Bellman in the 1980 movie "Somewhere in Time," the article says.

His TV work included numerous commercials, including one for Dreyer’s Ice Cream in which he played an old man who break dances when his wife tells him that dessert is ready. He also made appearances in shows such as "I Love Lucy," "Leave It to Beaver" and "The Andy Griffith Show.”

His more recent TV work included appearances in "Everwood" and "My Name is Earl."
