Full List of Oscar Nominations: Is This Year’s Crop Of Nominations (Including the Expanded List of Best Picture Nominees) Enough to Bring Younger Audiences (and a Bigger Audience) to Oscarcast?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has announced the nominations for the 83rd annual Academy Awards, featuring 10 nominees for best picture. Among them, “The King’s Speech” with 12 overall nominations and “True Grit” with 10 are early favorites.

Also nominated for best picture are “Black Swan,” “The Fighter,” “Inception,” “The Kids Are All Right,” “127 Hours,” “The Social Network,” “Toy Story 3” and “Winter’s Bone.”

The question for ABC is whether or not this year’s list of nominees is titanic enough to bring in millions of younger viewers.

Certainly one would think the "The Social Network" may be a draw, since it’s about Facebook–though much more a character study than about the phenomenon itself. Certainly "Inception" is a clever film that appealed to all ages. And "The Fighter" is definitely in the tradition of a crowd-pleaser such as "Rocky."

But films such as "Winter’s Bone," "The Kids Are All Right" and "127 Hours" probably won’t do a lot to get younger viewers to tune into the Oscarcast.

Nominees for best actress in a leading role are Annette Bening, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman and Michelle Williams. Their counterparts vying for best actor are Javier Bardem, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Colin Firth and James Franco.

The awards will be presented Sunday, Feb. 27, with the ceremony carried live on ABC.

  1. Unfortunately, I think that argument is undercut by the fact people make “Oscar movies.” The King’s Speech is one such creature. If the Oscars were really about discovering quality wherever it might be, it would be practically impossible to make Oscar bait films. Which are made with boring constancy.

  2. “The King’s Speech” is a fantastic film and deserving of all the praise. I hope it wins!!!! This movie in good quality you can find here: http://www.torrentoff.com

  3. Comments that lead to websites that rip off distributors and Producers and local theaters should be taken down immediately.
