Turner Exec Says Web Exposure for ‘Modern Family’ Killed Network’s Interest in Show

Turner Broadcasting Chief Executive Phil Kent noted at an investor conference on Tuesday afternoon that his company pulled out of bidding for "Modern Family" reruns because the show was too prevalent on the Internet, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Company Town blog.

That’s been a concern of the show’s co-creator, Steve Levitan, who has voiced worry that the show’s availability on Hulu and on ABC’s Web site would hurt the sitcom’s long-term value, the story points out.

While Turner, whose cable network TBS airs a lot of sitcom reruns, pulled away from the bidding, NBC Universal’s USA Network paid about $1.4 million for reruns of the show, the story notes.

Kent noted that Turner is adding terms for rerun deals that would limit shows’ exposure on other platforms, the article adds.
