Video: New Series Sets Ratings Record For a Debut on MTV

MTV’s latest series, which the network promoted widely, drew the most P12-34 viewers for a show launch in the network’s history, MTV said, citing Nielsen data.

The show is  the scripted teend draama series "Skins," based on the controversial U.K. hit show. The U.S. version of the show kicked off on MTV at 10 p.m. on Monday, January 17, 2011.

In the 12-34 demo the show drew 2.7 million viewers, which translates to a 3.4 rating. In total viewers the show drew 3.2 million.

According to the MTV press release, "Online, the premiere of “Skins” was Twitter’s #2 worldwide trending topic and #3 in the U.S. (#mtvskins). The series attracted over 50,000 Facebook fans prior to the series premiere on-air, growing by 230% in the week leading up to its debut."

In addition, the release noted that " ‘Skins’  bowed to a higher P12-34 rating than the launches of competitive scripted shows across both cable and network television, including ABC Family’s ‘Pretty Little Liars’ (2.2 rating – 6/8/10) and ‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’ (2.3 rating – 07/01/08), as well as CW’s ‘Gossip Girl’ (2.3 rating — 09/17/07), ‘90210’ (2.7 rating – 9/2/08) and ‘Vampire Diaries’ (2.4 rating – 09/1/09).
