NBC has met with a well-known TV personality about succeeding "Today" anchor Matt Lauer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The network talked about the job with "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest, the story reports.

NBC executives including "Today" executive producer Jim Bell met with Seacrest earlier this week, the story says. The meeting was part of continued discussions with the "Idol" host, the piece adds.

NBC and Seacrest’s representatives declined to comment, the article notes.

Lauer has reportedly considered moving on from "Today" when his contract expires near the end of 2012, the story says.

  1. Ryan Seacrest is not a newsman, he is an entertainment artist – and there is a difference! We don’t need entertainers acting as newsmen when they don’t have the credentials that go with it. This would be a downgrade to the Today Show and those who watch it. Ryan cannot handle anything that has not been ‘teleprompted’ and scripted. Its doubtful he would know how to handle a live crisis situation. Really dumb move NBC! Mall 727 net.

  2. Not a newsman, very little of this morning shows has anything to do with news. That is why they have a news desk.
Look at Katie, she was horrible with the news. She attacked people and called it an interview. Matt isn’t too far from that too.

  3. NBC is seeking to take the “news” out of the “Today Show?” How can the network seriously consider an entertainment announcer as a legitimate replacement for Lauer?
So it is true. NBC stands for “No Body Conscious” network afterall.
How stupid can you get NBC?

The Today show has clearly been entertainment only for years, and the Obama network for the past 3. Wake up. Seacrest will fit right in.

  5. When will it stop becoming chic to bash everything NBC does? Just wondering because it’s been goign on for years now.
That said, Seacrest would be an awful choice
