The race for viewers among morning shows on the broadcast networks is getting tighter, according to the New York Post.

ABC’s "Good Morning America" is closing the gap on NBC’s "Today," the perennial leader, the story reports, noting that the competition has added to the pressure for NBC to sign a deal with co-anchor Matt Lauer.

During the last week of the February sweeps, "Good Morning America" trailed "Today" by only 164,000 viewers, the smallest gap in about five years, the story adds. An NBC representative declined to comment.

As previously reported, "Today" is negotiating a multi-year contract with Lauer that would pay him about $25 million per year, representing an $8 million annual pay bump for the co-anchor.
