Audience Shrinks for Song and Dance Shows

Things appear to be getting tougher for singing and dancing competitions in the broadcast ratings, with Tuesday’s Nielsen overnights providing the latest indication.

ABC’s two “Dancing With the Stars” installments were down significantly Tuesday from the previous week, TVbytheNumbers.com reports, while NBC’s “The Voice” saw a downward trend for its first Tuesday elimination show of the season. Another NBC reality show, “The Biggest Loser,” was even with last week’s season low.

This on a night when CBS seemingly left the door open by airing all repeats.

NBC and ABC wound up tied for prime time overall with average ratings of 2.2 in the key 18-49 demo, well ahead of Fox (1.6 average), Univision (1.6) and CBS (1.5). ABC won total viewers with 11.9 million to 8.9 million for CBS, 6.3 million for NBC, 3.7 million for Univision and 3.6 million for Fox.

In overnights for the 18-49 demo, ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” recap show was down 0.2 rating points to a 1.8 average while the results show plummeted 0.4 points to a 2.7. NBC’s one-hour “The Voice” managed a 3.2, which was off 22% from Monday’s two-hour program. The show was off a whopping 54% from its first Monday telecast this season, but the story points out that the earlier broadcast had a bump from the big post-Super Bowl installment the previous night.

NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” remained at a season-low 2.0.

Fox failed to make any real headway, although “Raising Hope” rose a tenth of a rating point to a 1.6 average. That was countered by declines for “New Girl,” down three-tenths of a point to a season-low 2.3, and “Breaking In,” down one-tenth to a 1.3.

ABC’s “Body of Proof” held steady with a 2.0 average.

  1. It’s not the dancers, it’s the judges.

  2. I’m starting to think all the song/dance shows are fixed anyway…

  3. The “reality” is that there are only so many people that are really interested in this type of programming. When you put these show up head to head you are splitting that audience.
