A character who is familar to generations of TV viewers — either as a live-action series star or in animated form — will now be reinvented again, as a live-action superhero on the big screen.

The character is Sabrina the Teenage Witch, who has starred in various animated TV series going back as far as 1970 and in a live-action TV show that aired on ABC and The WB from 1996-2003.

Deadline.com reports that Sabrina is being revived by Sony Pictures for a live-action feature film focused on “a young girl coming to terms with her remarkable powers” — something along the lines of “Spider-Man.”

The report adds: “Scribes Andrew Barrer & Gabriel Ferrari (they wrote ‘Die in a Gunfight’ for MRC) will write the script, and ‘Real Steel’ producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford are producing. Mark Waters, who worked on the presentation that Sony Pictures sparked to, might direct depending on scheduling. Archie Comics’ Jon Goldwater will be executive producer and screenwriter Jeff Stockwell, who also worked on the presentation, will be co-producer.”

Sabrina’s roots are in the pages of Archie Comics, but she really came into her own on TV. Among Sabrina’s small-screen incarnations over the years: “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” (aka “Sabrina and the Groovie Goolies”), a CBS cartoon that aired in various forms from 1970-1974; “The New Archie and Sabrina Hour,” a short-lived animated NBC version in 1977; and the 1996-2003 sitcom “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch,” where she was played by Melissa Joan Hart.
