Geraldo Rivera Faces Trayvon Martin’s Parents After Drawing Fire for Hoodie Comment

Apr 2, 2012  •  Post A Comment

Geraldo Rivera had Trayvon Martin’s parents, Sybrina and Tracy, on his Sunday Fox News show, and formally apologized to them for his comments about Trayvon looking too "gangsta" because he was wearing a hoodie the night he was killed, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

On air, Rivera said: "What I was trying to do was caution parents allowing kids to wear hoodies or similar clothing in certain circumstances, particularly if they were minority young men could be dangerous. But I never intended to hurt anyone’s feelings and certainly Sybrina and Tracy, I never intended to hurt your feelings. I want to personally convey my deepest apologies to both of you. I am sorry, Tracy, if anything I said added to your misery.”

Trayvon’s father responded by accepting the apology, but also said: "Let me just add one thing with the wearing of the hood. I don’t think America knows that, in fact, at the time of the incident when he initially made the call, it was raining. So Trayvon had every right to have on his hood. He was protecting himself from the rain. So if being a suspicious, walking in the rain with your hoodie on is a crime, then I guess the world is doing something wrong.”

As reported previously, Rivera’s recent comments drew criticism in the controversial case. You can see a video with his original comments here.

  1. But not walking on sidewalks or pavement; through people’s yards (in the rain??)

  2. Omg Doug, stop the madness. When it’s raining and I want to get home as quickly as possible without getting drenched, imma cut through someones’ yard. That’s a fact. What, are you going just stand in the rain and take a shower like you have no common sense? Down here in Florida, that’s called craziness. Lol.
