Oprah Winfrey’s OWN cable network has struggled with poor ratings, management turnover and high costs, but the channel now has something to celebrate.

OWN signed a new distribution deal with Comcast, giving Winfrey’s fledgling network a boost in the number of homes that can watch it, reports The Wall Street Journal. (Please note that The WSJ is behind a pay wall and not all readers may be able to access the story.)

With the deal, 17 million Comcast customers will be able to watch OWN, compared with 14 million currently, the story notes. The deal brings the total number of homes with access to OWN to 83 million, up from 80 million.

Comcast will also start paying subscriber fees for OWN at the start of next year, while currently it carries the network without paying the dues. The new deal is "good news for OWN" given the channel’s difficulties, the piece adds.

  1. That is great – another 17 million that won’t tune in unless Oprah is on.
