Barry Diller’s Aereo Online TV Streaming Operation Gets Go-Ahead From Federal Judge; Broadcasters Say They Will Continue to Fight It

The television streaming service Aereo, backed by Barry Diller, got approval from a federal judge to go ahead, with the judge denying a temporary injunction sought by television broadcasters to shut down the service, reports The New York Times’ Media Decoder.

The broadcasters vowed to pursue their lawsuit against the start-up, which streams local TV stations’ signals over the Internet without the explicit approval of the stations, the piece notes.

The decision gives Diller, the chief executive of IAC/InterActiveCorp, and the service’s other backers the ability to move forward with the service.

"Aereo is one of the most ambitious attempts to distribute television over the Internet, potentially disrupting the existing arrangement of broadcast, cable and satellite distribution," the story says.

If the injunction had been granted, Aereo "could not have continued,” Diller wrote in an email, the piece adds.

A group representing Fox, Tribune, Univision and PBS stations vowed to "continue to fight," while CBS said, "This case is not over by a long shot.”
