With the Church of Scientology recently moving into the former home of Los Angeles public television station KCET-TV, it appears that the church is positioning to start its own television channel, reports the New York Post.

The church bought the studio last year for more than $42 million. A representative for the church said the complex will be "a central media hub for our growing world network of churches and to move into the production of religious television and radio broadcasting,”

The studio is where shows such as Carl Sagan’s "Cosmos" were produced, the piece adds. The church began moving into the facility on Sunset Boulevard a few weeks ago.

If the church starts its own TV network, it would be able to draw on its ranks of TV and movie stars, including John Travolta, Kelly Preston, Jason Lee, Jenna Elfman, Juliette Lewis, Catherine Bell and Elisabeth Moss, as well as Tom Cruise, the article notes.

“Speculation is that the new studio will be the home for a Scientology cable channel to help repair the church’s battered public image,” the story reports.

The piece notes that DVDs and Web programs promoting Scientology have been produced for years at a site near Hemet, Calif.

Scientology was founded 60 years ago by “failed science-fiction writer” L. Ron Hubbard, the article notes.
