In an interview Katie Holmes gave to C magazine on June 27 — one day before Holmes filed for divorce from Tom Cruise — the actress appeared flustered when asked about Cruise, the New York Post reports.

The story reports: “When asked if having daughter Suri, now six, brought her and Cruise closer together, Holmes became flustered. ‘I don’t know. I mean…..I don’t know,’ she responded, adding vaguely, ‘People have been having babies a long time.’"

Holmes, 33, never mentions Cruise in the interview.

The interview was conducted by C senior editor Kelsey McKinnon. McKinnon writes: "Going back over the tapes, there were signs: Holmes was certainly very aware of herself, laying a couple of cards on the table but never showing her whole hand."

McKinnon adds: "Most noticeably, the one name decisively absent from her lexicon: Tom Cruise. She never actually refers to him by name over pages and pages of transcription."

Holmes also hints in the interview that she’s ready for a new chapter in her life, the Post reports.

"I feel like I worked so much at such a young age that I really wanted to have life experiences,” she says in the interview. “I feel more balanced and like I have more to bring to the table. I always felt like I wanted to catch up [in my personal life] to what I was doing [in my career]."

The Holmes interview is the cover story for the September issue of C.
