A former star of the CBS procedural “CSI” is close to joining the cast of NBC’s upcoming “Hannibal,” TVLine.com reports. Closing in on a deal is “CSI” veteran Laurence Fishburne, also known as Morpheus in the "Matrix" movies,

Based on Thomas Harris’ "Red Dragon" novel, "Hannibal" deals with the character of Hannibal Lecter before his activities in "The Silence of the Lambs."

Fishburne would play Jack Crawford, the FBI agent who’s running the Behavioral Science Unit that’s tracking down a flesh-eating serial killer. In previous incarnations, the Crawford character was played in films by Scott Glenn ("Silence of the Lambs"), Dennis Farina ("Manhunter") and Harvey Keitel ("Red Dragon").

Bryan Fuller is heading up the NBC project ,which will have a midseason premiere. Hugh Dancy has already been cast as Will Graham, an FBI agent, with Lecter to be played by Mads Mikkelsen.
