A well-known restaurateur who has been called “the Queen of Soul Food” has died at 86, People magazine reports. Sylvia Woods was the owner of Sylvia’s Restaurant in Harlem.

Woods was featured on multiple food shows, and was renowned for her leadership in soul food cuisine.

New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg told the New York Daily News, "We lost a legend today. Generations of family and friends have come together at what became a New York institution."

Sylvia’s Restaurant opened in 1962 and became a New York landmark; recently it was featured in Food Network’s "The Next Food Network Star."

Sylvia — as everyone called her — believed in giving personal attention to her customers and was known as a hard worker. She worked until the age of 80, before retiring and letting her family take over the establishment.

She’s credited with making soul food popular to a broader audience.
