Test Format for CBS’s ‘Face the Nation’ to Become Permanent After Ratings Surge

A format that has been tested since this spring will become permanent for CBS’s "Face the Nation," reports B&C.

The show will now permanently be expanded to one hour, the story notes.

The show was expanded from its half-hour format in April during a 20-week test meant to capture viewer interest in the 2012 presidential election. Compared with a year earlier, "Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer" is up 11% in total viewers and up 33% in the target news demo of adults 25 to 54, according to the story.

CBS plans to continue to rate the show’s two half-hours separately because football season will force pre-emptions in many markets, the article notes, citing CBS News President David Rhodes, who made the announcement Sunday at the Television Critics Association press tour.

The network will transition to rating the full hour when sports aren’t an issue.
