ABC has decided to wrap up a drama series created by Shonda Rhimes, which will end its run after it completes the 13-episode order it received in May. Nellie Andreeva reports on Deadline.com that ABC has opted not to give “Private Practice” a back-nine pickup.

"I hear ABC brass and ‘Grey’s’ and ‘Private Practice’ creator/executive producer Shonda Rhimes recently came to the conclusion that the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ spinoff had run its course, and it was time for it to end after five-and-a-half seasons," Andreeva writes. "The final cancellation decision was made this afternoon [Friday, Oct. 19], and Rhimes just broke the news to the ‘Private Practice’ cast and crew."

The show was facing the departure of star Kate Walsh, who was already set to leave after the season’s 13th episode, which will now be the show’s finale, the story notes.
