" ‘Farm Update: NBC has passed on moving forward with ‘The Farm’ TV show. Had a blast making the pilot – onwards & upwards,’ Rainn Wilson tweeted Monday [Oct. 29, 2012], reports TVGuide.com.

The article continues: "News first broke about plans for the possible spin-off, which was centered on Wilson’s character Dwight and his Schrute family beet farm, back in January before it was announced that the current season of ‘The Office’ would be its last. Paul Lieberstein, who plays Toby on ‘The Office,’ left his post as showrunner of the NBC comedy to help develop ‘The Farm.’ "

The story adds: "Much like other spin-offs including ‘Private Practice’ and ‘The Finder’ in recent years, ‘The Farm’ was supposed to first launch in an episode of ‘The Office’ this season."

Such episodes are known as backdoor pilots.

  1. Good move by NBC to NOT pick this show up. …Hard, cold truth: As the (horrible) ratings now prove, The Office without Steve Carrell, is an embarassment to network TV. Carrell literally made the show, and carried the “actors” and the show. The show without him, is painful to watch and demonstrates that the current ensemble are good bit players, but not real talented stand-alone actors or actresses. Hopefully, they have saved theirpaychecks and enjoyed their 15 minutes of fame.

  2. With the Thursday night ratings hitting record lows, I am not surprised by this move. NBC is aiming toward. “mainstream” comedies, instead of the critically acclaimed but low rated. This does not bode well for the future of their remaining Thursday comedies, particularly Parks & Recreation.
