Report: CBS Veteran Is Frontrunner to Replace Jeff Zucker on ‘Katie’

A frontrunner has reportedly emerged to replace Jeff Zucker as executive producer on Katie Couric’s daytime talk show "Katie.” The New York Post reports that the leading contender is David Friedman, a former producer of CBS’s "The Early Show.”

As previously reported, Couric’s syndicated talk show is searching for a new producer amid speculation that Zucker will soon leave for a top executive position elsewhere.

Hiring Friedman would presumably require Couric to bury some potential bad feelings, since Friedman’s father, Paul — the No. 2 executive at CBS News — was one of Couric’s biggest detractors while she was at CBS, the story notes.

Paul Friedman became known for his putdowns of Couric and for keeping her from appearing outside the evening newscast, the story adds.

Since getting ousted from "The Early Show" last year, David Friedman has been working as a freelance producer. One of his recent projects was the summer game show "Oh, Sit!" for CW.
