With ‘Munsters’ Reboot Apparently Dead at NBC, Suddenly the PR Machine Is in Overdrive — Including First-Look Photos

With news breaking this week that NBC’s “Mockingbird Lane” — its heavily hyped dramatic reboot of the classic 1960s sitcom “The Munsters” — is apparently dead on arrival at the network, suddenly the project appears to be getting more attention than ever.

As we reported yesterday, the pilot for the ill-fated show is now set to air as a Halloween special on Friday, Oct. 26, at 8 p.m., slotted before “Grimm.” The project stars Jerry O’Connell as Herman Munster, a role made famous by Fred Gwynne, and Portia de Rossi as Lily Munster, taking over for Yvonne De Carlo.

Meanwhile, first-look photos have surfaced of the new cast in character. Yahoo posted a series of shots revealing the look of the new version — with most of the characters appearing decidedly more “human” than their counterparts did in the Sixties. The Yahoo report cites creative differences between the network and show creator Bryan Fuller as the reason the $10 million project has been scrapped.

Along with O’Connell and de Rossi, the cast includes Eddie Izzard as vampire Grandpa; Mason Cook as werewolf son Eddie (minus the widow’s peak!); and British actress Charity Wakefield as cousin Marilyn.

Here’s a shot from Yahoo based on material released by NBC, comparing the new cast and the old:
