The MLB Network announced that it has acquired the exclusive English-language rights to broadcast the World Baseball Classic, reports B&C. MLB Network will have the rights for 2013 and 2017, the next two tournaments.

The 2013 contest will be held March 2-19, 2013, featuring 28 teams from around the globe. The Classic originated in 2005 after the International Olympic Committee decided to exclude baseball from the Summer Olympics.

In a statement, MLB Network President and CEO Tony Petitti said of the acquisition: "The World Baseball Classic is the premier international baseball competition and acquiring the exclusive rights to the 2013 and 2017 tournaments continues MLB Network’s goal of acquiring premium exclusive content to help grow the network and serve baseball fans."

MLB Network is promoting the event during its World Series coverage.
