Disney Giving Up on Its Movies Online Service

Disney is shuttering its Disney Movies Online service after the site failed to catch on with consumers, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The site allowed consumers to buy or rent digital versions of Disney and Pixar movies to view on their computers, but the site was hampered by limitations. For instance, movies could only be viewed via a Web browser and couldn’t be downloaded for playback, the story adds.

"Disney Movies Online does not have the flexibility that many users today demand," the company said in a statement. "We made a business decision to close the service until we are able to provide the greatest value and experience to our customers."

The service will shut down Dec. 31.

Disney is working on another service called Disney Movies Anywhere, but a debut date hasn’t been announced.
