An eight-part documentary on the impact of climate change is in the works at Showtime with high-powered principals involved, including James Cameron and Jerry Weintraub, TheWrap.com reports.

Citing individual with knowledge of the project, the piece says “The Years of Living Dangerously” will feature well-known actors serving as reporters, “seeking out victims of drought, hurricanes and pestilence so they can tell their stories.”

A sizzle reel has already been completed, but the schedule for completion of the project is unknown, the report adds.

“The documentary will underscore the connection between those tragedies and a shifting climate, giving the issue a human face,” the story reports. Showtime is reportedly still seeking additional funding for the costly project.

The pay-cable network declined to comment, and reps for Cameron and Weintraub did not return requests for comment, the piece notes.

Producing the doc are David Gelber, an exec producer at CBS, and Joel Bach of “60 Minutes.”

The report notes: “The environment has long been an issue dear to Cameron, whose 2009 blockbuster ‘Avatar’ has been interpreted as an allegory for mankind’s deleterious impact on the environment.”
