Sunday Ratings: ABC Continues Its Losing Streak With Awards Shows

Nov 19, 2012  •  Post A Comment

ABC continues to strike sour notes with its awards show telecasts, based on Nielsen overnights for Sunday night. TVbytheNumbers.com reports that the “American Music Awards” delivered a 3.4 average rating in the key 18-49 demo, down significantly from the 4.3 recorded for the broadcast a year ago and an all-time low for the “AMAs.”

The broadcast’s 9.47 million average in total viewers was also an all-time low.

The poor performance continued a recent trend in awards shows for ABC, following a poor performance by the “Country Music Awards” earlier this month. That Nov. 1 broadcast delivered a preliminary 3.8 average rating in viewers 18-49, down 21% from last year, with 13.6 million total viewers, down 17% — setting historic lows in both measures.

Unlike Nov. 1, when ABC was able to win the night despite the poor performance of the “CMAs,” ABC came up short in the ratings last night. NBC won prime time overall with a 4.9 average in the 18-49 demo, followed by CBS (3.0 average), ABC (2.9) and Fox (2.0). NBC claimed a narrow win in total viewers, averaging 13.3 million to 12.6 million for CBS, 9.0 million for ABC and 4.2 million for Fox.

The report notes that CBS’s numbers will be subject to considerable adjustment due to football overruns delaying the start times of prime-time programming.

NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” was down significantly from a week earlier, settling for a preliminary 6.0 average rating in the 18-49 demo, down from last week’s 7.9.

Fox’s animation lineup was mostly down from a week ago: “The Simpsons” dropped seven-tenths of a ratings point to a 2.5; “Bob’s Burgers” fell six-tenths to a 1.8; and “Family Guy” slipped two-tenths to a 2.5. Breaking the trend was “American Dad,” which improved two-tenths to a 2.0.

  1. Maybe the TV public is getting sick of watching these self-serving programs where artists are recognized for there talents by their OWN INDUSTRY! Why are there televised music, TV and movie awards shows? TO SELL MORE MUSIC, TV and MOVIE PRODUCT. I am done with them, personally. Apparently, so are many others!

  2. edfrat, you are incorrect when it comes to the American Music Awards. These awards are voted on by the FANS and not the industry folks. The AMAs used to garner higher ratings when they aired in January, but in recent years the show was moved a few months earlier due to the glut of January kudofests!
