USA Officially Ends Drama Series

The USA Network put to rest speculation about the fate of a drama series that had been up in the air, Deadline.com reports. The series is "Political Animals," which originated as a miniseries but which some observers hoped would continue as a regular series. The cable network confirmed that the series will not continue.

The Greg Berlanti drama boasted a stellar cast, headed up by Sigourney Weaver and Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, but it was only a modest success for USA. It had 3.8 million total viewers for its premiere, and averaged 3.2 million total viewers in Live+7 over its summer run. Those numbers were good, but not strong enough to justify such an expensive production.

In a statement, a spokesperson for USA said, “We are proud of ‘Political Animals,’ our miniseries that attracted critical acclaim and impacted the cultural conversation this summer. It was a pleasure to work with Greg Berlanti and Laurence Mark and a powerful cast led by Sigourney Weaver. We look forward to collaborating again with these immensely talented creatives.”

Berlanti has moved on to the CW hit "Arrow," and is working on a midseason CBS drama "Golden Boy" among other project.

  1. It just does not pay to get hooked on these new series, when the networks just pull the plug when they feel they are not making enough. This show was great and had a “moderate” sucess for USA, but I guess moderate is not enough!
