ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” debuted in its new 11:35 p.m. time slot Tuesday night, moving into direct competition with NBC’s “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and CBS’s “Late Show with David Letterman.” ABC announced that the show delivered its second-biggest audience of all time.

Based on Nielsen Live + Same Day Fast Nationals, “Kimmel” topped “Letterman” and came in a close second to “Leno.” ABC reports that “Kimmel” improved on its season average in its previous midnight time slot by 59% in total viewers and 33% in the 18-49 demo.

Head-to-head against the two late-night veterans, “Kimmel” delivered 3.097 total viewers Tuesday night, topping “Letterman’s” 2.882 million and nearly matching “Leno’s” 3.274 million.

Among younger viewers (18-49), “Kimmel” was 30% ahead of “Letterman,” 887,000 to 683,000. “Kimmel” fell short of the number for “Leno” in the demo — 1.084 million — by only 197,000 viewers.

ABC also touted “Kimmel’s” performance in major markets, reporting: “In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, ‘JKL’ ranked No. 1 in its time period in Adults 18-49 in 13 markets, including the No. 1 U.S. market: New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Atlanta, Houston, Seattle, Miami, Cleveland, Orlando, Sacramento and Baltimore. In Households, ‘JKL’ won its time slot in 8 of the Top 10 markets, including each of the Top 4 (NY, LA, CH, PH).”
