On the same day that Lance Armstrong’s eagerly anticipated interview with Oprah Winfrey is scheduled to air, the disgraced cyclist suffered another setback with the news that he is no longer an Olympic medalist.

A spokesman for the International Olympic Committee said the organization has stripped Armstrong of his bronze medal from the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, CNN reports. The committee has asked Armstrong to return the medal.

As previously reported, Armstrong is expected to admit using performance-enhancing drugs in a two-part interview with Oprah Winfrey, scheduled to air tonight and Friday as part of “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” on her OWN network.

The International Cycling Union stripped the cyclist of his seven Tour de France championships in October. The IOC announced at that time that it would review evidence against Armstrong, who placed third in the men’s individual time trial and 13th in the men’s individual road race at the Sydney Games.

The committee said today that Armstrong has been disqualified retroactively from both events.

Said IOC spokesman Mark Adams: "We have written to Armstrong asking him to return the medal." He noted that the U.S. Olympic Committee had been notified and would be responsible for retrieving the medal.

CNN adds: “The decision was made ‘in principle’ at a meeting of the IOC executive board in December, Adams said. The committee did not act on the decision until it received confirmation from the International Cycling Union that Armstrong was not appealing that agency’s decision.”
