The "Sex and the City" prequel on the CW will deal with AIDS and the consequences of drug use and promiscuity, reports the New York Post.

The show, "The Carrie Diaries," is set in 1984 and will debut tonight.

“I don’t think we can play a series that takes place in the ’80s and in New York and not examine that,” producer Amy Harris said Sunday at the Television Critics Association press tour.

The show, which features Carrie Bradshaw as a teen, won’t introduce young versions of Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte during the first season.

"Hopefully the audience will fall in love with Carrie Bradshaw at 16, learn about her world and all these other people in it, and then we will slowly integrate these other characters," Harris said.

AnnaSophia Robb stars as the teenage version of the character made famous by Sarah Jessica Parker in the long-running HBO series.
