Syfy Cancels Drama Series

Jan 17, 2013  •  Post A Comment

Syfy has canceled a drama series after failing to pump up viewership numbers for the show, reports EW.com’s Inside TV. The network tried switching showrunners between seasons one and two of “Alphas,” but the moved failed to produce higher ratings.

The show’s cancellation is not a surprise, the piece says, noting that the series’ second-season debut in summer 2012 attracted only 1.7 million viewers, a sizable dropoff from the season-one debut.

“Syfy has decided not to renew ‘Alphas’ for a third season. We’ve been proud to present this entertaining, high-quality series for two seasons and to work with an incredible ensemble of talented actors, producers and creatives as well as our partners at BermanBraun Television," the network said in a statement. “We’d like to thank the show’s dedicated regular viewers for their tremendous support.”

  1. Not a bad call. Writers got so distracted by their own inventions, they allowed all the principals to become people you wouldn’t want to hang with. Let’s hope Continuum does better.

  2. Im not one of those sci-fi zealots who got all up in arms over the network format change, but take away WWE from this network and its a disaster as a business. They are right up there with spike in how much money they squandered over average (at best) programming. Any success they’ve had is with a rather old demographic that commands the lowest advertising rates. could do so much better.

  3. My girlfriend and I loved this show. Great quality all the way around. This, and Being Human are the only shows worth watching on this otherwise lackluster network.
I had no idea the second season had started. Had it not been for my DVR (I had it set to record the show from the first season), I would never had known it was back. They should have spent more time marketing the show online were a large chunk of it’s potential viewing audience would be. Get bloggers and such to do weekly reviews of the showAlso, put all the back episodes on demand so potential viewers can catch up. I’ve discovered great shows by on demand alone.

  4. SyFy / SciFi has been a Class 5 cluster-f**k almost since it hit the air. Hard to believe that this is a channel that once had Asimov & Roddenberry on their board. The market is ripe for a real SF / fantasy / horror themed basic channel that would tear this travesty to shreds.

  5. I’ve always pondered how the WWE ended up on a sci-fi channel anyway? I know the wrassling fake, are the competitors from other planets?

  6. Publicizing the bloggers would have just added to their issues as the bloggers thought the show stunk too.
