After taking Current TV off its systems following the channel’s purchase by the pan-Arab broadcaster Al Jazeera, Time Warner Cable said it would keep "an open mind" and size up the new network as it develops, reports The New York Times’ Media Decoder.

“We are keeping an open mind, and as the service develops, we will evaluate whether it makes sense, for our customers, to launch the network,” Time Warner Cable said in a statement Thursday.

As previously reported, Current TV was sold to Al Jazeera for $500 million; Time Warner Cable immediately announced it would drop the service, and within hours the channel went dark on TWC systems.

The cable operator noted that it had an option to carry Al Jazeera’s current English-language network if it wanted to, but hadn’t yet activated that option, according to The Times. The reason is that Time Warner Cable, like other pay-TV operators, felt there wasn’t enough viewer demand for the network.
