Barbie’s Ditching Malibu: Famed Doll Will ‘Sell’ Dream Home for $25 Million

Malibu will be losing one of its most famous residents; Barbie, the classic children’s toy, will be "selling" the beach house that she has called her residence in Malibu since 1971, reports The New York Times.

The asking price is $25 million, the story reports.

“Potential buyers may want to try bargaining down the price when they realize the house has only one bedroom and one bathroom — and three walls,” the piece quips.

Mattel’s announcement of Barbie’s move launches a marketing campaign that will end with the announcement of Barbie’s new home. That house will be brought out in a playset in the fall, just before the holiday shopping season.

The marketing campaign will combine real and imaginary elements, with the Malibu home getting a posting on Trulia. Barbie is "hiring" Josh Altman, a cast member of "Million Dollar Listing: Los Angeles," to list the house.

Four designers will work with Barbie on finding a new home. Among them is Jonathan Adler, who worked on a 2009 playset as a commemoration of Barbie’s 50th anniversary, the story says.

Where will Barbie end up living? Stay tuned. Altman, the report notes, “said he would be glad to show Barbie new homes ‘anywhere on the planet’ because ‘she speaks God knows how many languages.’”

Altman added: “Ken is fine with whatever she wants to do.”

The piece adds: “After suggesting that he might advise Barbie to buy ‘a skyscraper in Manhattan,’ Mr. Altman ended the conversation by declaring: ‘This is Barbie on the other line; I’ve got to go.’”

  1. She should have used Madison. He’s the Malibu specialist.

  2. She needs to get out of California like everyone else with a high income and move to a no income tax state like Washington.
