Geraldo Rivera, who has been making noise about running for political office in New Jersey, will lose his job at Fox News Channel as soon as he decides to run, reports The New York Times’ Media Decoder.
Rivera, 69, could no longer host "Geraldo at Large" if he decides to run for a Senate seat, a spokeswoman for Fox News said.
Fox News has been in similar situations before. When two of its contributors, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, were considering running for president, Fox News suspended their contracts. Ultimately, both decided to run and cut their ties to the network, the story says.
Rivera, who is considered one of Fox News’ more liberal commentators, would run as a Republican if he seeks the Senate seat currently held by Frank R. Lautenberg, a Democrat. Lautenberg is up for re-election in 2014.
I watched a Fox show where Geraldo and a woman co-host were talking. She said something to the affect that he was a Liberal or Democrat. He vehemently denied it by saying he was a Republican. I guess he is as Republican as Colin Powell.
