Did ABC’s New Show Make a ‘Splash’? Did NBC’s ‘Smash’ Crash? Here Are the Numbers

The turnout for ABC’s new celebrity diving competition Tuesday night created at least a ripple in the ratings, based on Nielsen overnights for the key 18-49 demo. But it wasn’t quite the full-blown cannonball splash the network may have been hoping for.

TVbytheNumbers.com reports that the show’s one-hour premiere delivered a 2.6 average rating in viewers 18-49, not enough to elevate ABC to contention for No. 1 for the night, but 13% better than the series premiere for “Celebrity Wife Swap” a little more than a year ago. And these days, with broadcast numbers steadily eroding, anything that compares favorably with a year ago is a good thing.

It was the best premiere for an unscripted series on ABC in more than two years.

CBS won the night handily anyway — especially in total viewers. The numbers for the 18-49 demo showed CBS on top for prime time with a 2.6, followed by Fox and ABC at 2.0, Univision with a 1.4 and NBC stumbling home in fifth place with a 0.9. CBS distanced itself from the pack in total viewers with 15.0 million, followed by ABC’s 8.9 million, Fox’s 4.3 million, Univision’s 3.5 million and NBC’s 2.9 million.

NBC’s “Smash” continues to struggle, losing 11% from last week and equaling its series low with a 0.8 average in adults 18-49.

CBS’s drama lineup was mixed, with “NCIS” slipping 9% from its most recent original to a 3.1 average, still claiming the best number of the night in 18-49. “NCIS: Los Angeles” was steady with a 2.8, while “Golden Boy” improved 13% with a 1.7 as CBS won every hour of prime time.

Fox was mostly down, with “Hell’s Kitchen” dipping 5% from last week’s season premiere to a 2.0 in the 18-49 demo and “New Girl” eroding 4% from its previous original to a 2.2, while “The Mindy Project” held steady with a 1.7.

Leading out from “Splash,” ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars: Exclusive First Look” did a 2.1, 5% better than “DWTS: The Story So Far” a year ago. “Body of Proof” was another bright spot of sorts for ABC, surging 25% from last week to a 1.5.

NBC barely topped a 1.0 all night in viewers 18-49, with the second episode of “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers” managing a 1.1 after the opener scored a 1.0. “Go On” delivered a 1.0, and it was downhill from there, with “The New Normal” hitting a series low with a 0.7 and “Smash” equaling its series-low 0.8.
