Did FX Mess Up With Big Order for Sheen’s ‘Anger Management’?

FX’s unusually large commitment to "Anger Management," Charlie Sheen’s comedy, now appears as though it may have been a bit hasty, reports The New York Times’ Arts Beat.

With 80 episodes of the cable channel’s 90-episode order left to go, the show’s ratings have fallen sharply, the story notes.

The most recent episode, which aired March 14, drew about 850,000 total viewers, the program’s lowest audience ever and a huge dropoff from last June, when 5.47 million viewers tuned in and made the program the No. 1 scripted comedy telecast ever for FX, the story adds.

FX ordered 90 additional episodes when "Anger Management" was averaging 3 million total viewers per episode, but the ratings have been on the decline since then. The second season has been averaging 1.25 million viewers.

An upcoming guest-starring role by Lindsay Lohan might boost ratings, but "the long-term ratings prospects for the show, at its current audience totals, paint a bleak picture," the piece says.

  1. I like Charlie Sheen. 2-1/2 Men was a brilliant show–even funnier than Seinfeld, one of my all-time favorites. But–the problem with Anger Management is that the whole premise is not funny. The recurring “support group” that meets with Charlie are quirky, but not funny. The interplay between Charlie and Jon Cryer and the rest of the Men cast was superb. Ashton C. can’t carry the weight, and the newer Men just doesn’t make it as the original proves over and over in reruns. They either have to retool AM or limp along until it dies a slow death. Charlie should be brought back to Men and be done with this “experiment” in agony. Ain’t funny, McGee.
