Lawsuit by Actress Against IMDb Headed to Trial

A lawsuit by an actress who sued Amazon and its IMDb unit has been allowed to go to trial, reports The New York Times’ Media Decoder. A judge ruled Monday that Junie Hoang, who sued because IMDb posted her age, could proceed to trial with a breach of contract claim and request for damages related to her career, the story says.

The judge, however, excluded Amazon as a defendant, meaning that only IMDb is left in the suit, the story says. Hoang was also barred from claiming emotional distress. The judge also "granted summary judgment denying a claim that the database had violated the Consumer Protection Act by publishing Ms. Hoang’s age without her consent," the piece adds.

Hoang, who is now 41 years old, filed a complaint in 2011 that claimed IMDb.com had illegally used her credit card information to find out and post her age. In an industry that places a high value on youth, she claimed the disclosure opened her up to age discrimination.

“Anyone who values their privacy and has ever given credit card information to an online company like IMDb or Amazon.com should be concerned about the outcome,” Hoang said in a statement.
