CBS is bringing aboard "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off" star Matthew Broderick to star in a new project. Deadline.com reports that Broderick will star in an untitled Tad Quill comedy pilot, marking a rare television role for the actor.

The pilot, directed by James Burrows, is about Jack — Broderick’s character — who is raising his 12-year-old son after becoming recently widowed. He’s also trying to start dating again.

CBS first developed the project three years ago, but put it on hold because of trouble finding the right actor for the lead character, the story notes.

Broderick was hired after a "lengthy courtship," the story adds. He’s involved in theater, and is familiar on CBS through his regular presence at the Tony Awards. He also guest-starred recently on ABC’s "Modern Family" and NBC’s "30 Rock."
