The Healthiest Non-TV Story of the Day: Quick, What Foods Were Named California’s Official State Fruit and State Vegetable Just This Week? (Hint: The Orange Is NOT the Fruit)

On Wednesday, April 10, 2013, California Lt. Governor — and former mayor of San Francisco — Gavin Newsom named two foods as the official fruit and vegetable of the state, according to The Packer, which has been covering the produce industry since 1893.

Says the story, Newsom "has proclaimed artichokes the state vegetable and avocados the state fruit."

For those of you who have long thought that avocados are also vegetables, no, they are fruits. As we understand it, avocados are classified as fruits because they have a large pit.

The article continues, "Newsom also declared almonds the state nut and rice the state grain. Newsom is acting governor while Jerry Brown is in China on a trade tour."

  1. Gavin Newsom reminds me of another famous Newsom… the late Tommy Newsom!

  2. Jerry Brown is California’s state nut.
