The woman who inspired one of the most popular TV characters of all time has died. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Margaret "Marge” Groening, the mother of "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening and the inspiration for Marge on the TV show, died at 94.

According to a death notice published in The Oregonian, her parents, Matt and Ingeborg Wiggum, met on a boat sailing to America from Norway.

She married her classmate Homer Groening "because he made her laugh the most," the notice says. Homer Groening, a cartoonist, died in 1996, according to The Reporter.

"The names of Matt Groening’s parents (and those of his sisters Lisa and Maggie) make it obvious that the inspiration for Fox’s long-running ‘Simpsons’ came from his family," The Reporter notes.
