In a move that’s reminiscent of the family-friendly productions aired in the past, NBC will broadcast a three-hour live staging of "The Sound of Music." Deadline.com reports that the program will air Thursday, Dec. 5.

The announcement was made by NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt, who noted that such big family-focused shows aren’t often undertaken today, "but we are doing it anyway." Maria von Trapp will be played by “American Idol" winner Carrie Underwood. In the famed movie, the role was played by Julie Andrews.

The staging is based on the original Broadway musical and tells the true story of Maria von Trapp, who becomes a governess for an aristocratic widower’s seven children and falls in love with her employer.
