Pop singer George Michael was airlifted to a hospital Thursday after receiving what was reported as a head injury in a single-vehicle collision in England, TMZ.com reports.

Doctors said the singer, who was part of the pop duo Wham! and has had a successful solo career, was expected to be OK, according to the report.

“According to the singer’s rep, Michael was a passenger in a Range Rover that crashed on the M1 motorway (a huge freeway) at around 5:50 PM local time,” TMZ reports. “The rep says no [other] vehicles were involved in the crash. It’s unclear exactly what caused the collision.”

A statement released by a rep for the emergency response team says: "[George] sustained a head injury and following treatment, stabilisation and immobilization by land and air ambulance crews, he was flown to the hospital for further care."

The spokesperson for Michael said the singer suffered "superficial cuts" and was recovering.

Michael has reportedly sold more than 100 million records worldwide, and was ranked in 2008 as the 40th most successful artist on the Billboard Hot 100 Top All-Time Artists list.
