‘Game of Thrones’ Finale: Did It Set a Ratings Record for HBO?

The season three finale of HBO’s hit drama series “Game of Thrones” was a huge ratings draw Sunday night for the pay-cable network, but The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports that it fell just short of a record.

The initial airing of the episode brought in 5.4 million total viewers — an increase of 28% over the second-season finale’s 4.2 million. The result solidified the status of “Thrones” as the No. 2 most-watched series in HBO history, the piece reports.

“The latest gross numbers (a combination of originals, encores, DVR, On Demand and HBO Go) have the third season of ‘Game of Thrones’ averaging 13.6 million viewers,” THR reports. “That’s an increase of 2 million viewers from last season (11.6 million viewers) and makes the series HBO’s most watched since the 2004 season of ‘The Sopranos.’”

The series set four new series highs in the course of season three, the report adds, with the highest number for an initial telecast of a single episode coming in week six, when the show delivered 5.5 million total viewers.

“Prior to this season, ‘True Blood’ ranked as the second-most-watched series in network history and the most watched currently running program,” the report adds. “The vampire drama returns for its sixth season on Sunday.”

  1. The initial airing of the episode, “Red Wedding,”
Actually, the “Red Wedding” was a major event in the series that happened during LAST WEEK’S eposode titled “The Rains of Castamere”. The finale was called “Myhssa”, which means “Mother” in one of the languages they use on the show.

  2. Right you are, Mikey. We corrected the mistake. Thanks!
