Showtime Pulls Plug on Drama Series

Showtime is ending the run of a drama series. Writing on Deadline.com, Nellie Andreeva reports that the pay-cable channel will pull the plug on the medieval series "The Borgias" at the end of its current third season.

The June 16 season finale will serve as the show’s series finale, the story notes. The show was originally envisioned as running for four seasons, similar to the network’s historical drama "The Tudors."

Creator Neil Jordan said that while filming a pivotal scene in the third-season finale, star Jeremy Irons turned to him and said, "This feels like the end of something, that the family has come to an end.”

"While mulling a potential fourth season, Jordan said he wasn’t sure he had enough material for 10 episodes and wasn’t sure whether Showtime would want to commit to another season either," Andreeva writes.

Jordan said, "As a compromise, I proposed to finish the arc of all the characters with a two-hour movie.” He added, “When they looked at what it could cost, it was just too expensive."

He noted that he nevertheless likes where the story ends with the third-season finale.
