CBS and Time Warner Cable Extend Deadline, Fueling Hope That Blackout Will Be Averted

CBS and Time Warner Cable extended their current contract, averting a deadline that would have led to a blackout of CBS stations in big cities including New York and Los Angeles, reports The New York Times‘ Bill Carter.

The two sides said after 11 p.m. Wednesday, hours before the deadline of 9 a.m. today, that they had extended the deadline through 5 p.m. next Monday, the story reports.

Carter writes, "CBS had made public statements asking for an extension in the negotiations, while Time Warner Cable was holding off on agreeing to one. But the decision to extend makes a showdown much less likely. In previous standoffs between networks and cable companies over compensation for station signals, extensions have generally meant neither side wants to push the dispute to the point where cable customers lose access to channels."
